Dynamic vs static QR codes: which one should you print?

Every QR code decision comes down to one question: will the destination ever need to change after the ink is dry? Answer that honestly and the static vs dynamic choice makes itself. Here is how each actually works, and the trap that catches people who pick dynamic without reading the fine print.

Static: the pattern is the URL

A static QR code encodes your URL directly into the black and white pattern. There is no service behind it, no account, nothing that can expire. Scan it in ten years and it still points exactly where it pointed on day one.

That permanence is also the limitation. The pattern is the URL, so the destination can never change. If the page moves, the menu PDF gets renamed, or the campaign ends, every printed copy is pointing at a dead or wrong page, forever. And because the scan goes straight from camera to destination, nothing is counted. You will never know whether 5 people scanned your poster or 5,000.

Static is genuinely the right answer more often than QR vendors admit: a wifi password on the guest room wall, a link to a one-night event, a business card pointing at your homepage. Dynamic: the pattern is a short link

A dynamic QR code encodes a short link instead, something like go.yourbrand.com/menu. The scan hits the short link first, the short link forwards to the real destination, and that middle step is what buys you the two things static can never do:

The reprint math

A restaurant with 40 tables laminates 40 QR menus. The menu changes seasonally, so with static codes that is 40 reprints, four times a year, plus the day of swapping them out and the week where half the tables scan to the old menu. With a dynamic code it is one edit in a dashboard, and every table is current the same second.

Scale that logic to packaging runs, retail signage, vehicle wraps, or brochures printed in the thousands and the answer stops being close. The moment a QR code is printed in quantity, on anything that outlives one campaign, dynamic pays for itself the first time the destination moves.

The trap: whose domain is in your print?

Here is the part most QR articles skip. When a free QR website offers you a dynamic code, the short link inside it lives on their domain, not yours. Your restaurant menus, your product packaging, your trade show banners, all carrying a stranger's domain baked permanently into the ink.

That has two consequences. First, you are locked in: the moment their free tier ends, their prices rise, or the service shuts down, every code you ever printed dies with them, and no reprint budget fixes it retroactively. Second, scanners see their name, not yours, in the camera preview, and shared shortener domains carry whatever reputation their worst users earned them.

The rule before you print: look at the actual URL inside your QR code. If the domain is not one you own and renew yourself, everything you print is a bet on someone else's business model.
